We've seen this with Asus routers lately. They gimped the official firmware's wireless strengths and to get it back you have to use John's fork of Merlin. Their official firmware lately has had to make more tweaks to it to comply with FCC standards.

It's only relevant if you have an Asus router that can be flashed with Merlin's fork of the official firmware. It adds a few more features to the original. John's fork of Merlin's keeps the old radio code before it got nerfed. Though I don't use it myself as my router still broadcasts well enough for me, just a point I made about the FCC in that it may soon crack down more on this sort of thing. And of course even the official firmware is a fork of OpenWRT, which is a fork of Tomato, I think. Those in turn are open source linux-based firmware. That's open source for you, forks everywhere. And in most cases that's good.
