About 23.000 Dutch people joined the SS, other countries had more members and a lot more people were in the Resistance.

According to recent researches more than 30 people died, perhaps even 40. The true reasons and facts are still not quite clear as it has never been properly investigated till quite recently. Any eye witness accounts are more than welcome.

Quite, Americans were busy elsewhere. Canadians actually entered Amsterdam before the Dam square shooting mentioned above.

Although this question is not for me and I did not live trough the war myself, I've spoken to many members of the resistance and can perhaps answer it a bit, if you don't mind.
Queen Wilhelmina was a big source of inspiration to the Dutch, resistance of not. She spoke on the BBC and her speeches were handed out by the resistance. It was great for morale, it had such a big impact that she even seemed to reach those in the communist and socialist resistance groups, these people generally didn't have much affection for the royal family or were even against it. She earned her title "Mother of the fatherland" when she did that, a title much more valuable than queen. In reality she may not have had a huge impact on how the war went (although she tried) but seen how she went from being very disliked for "abandoning' us in 1940 to being generally admired, she did something right.

"Zwartboek" is a pretty bad movie full of inconsistencies and in many cases not authentic or realistic at all.
