Sorry to go off on a tangent here, but you linking an old comic brought this to mind. Zach, there's no good way to search the SMBC archives and it's really hampering my ability to quickly post "relevant SMBC" links for that glorious karma in order to spread awareness of your most excellent webcomic. Normally when I try to find a specific, half remembered comic, I end up spending half an hour on it until I either give up or find it but the offhand comment that sent me down the rabbit hole has long passed.

I'm actually still trying to find one you did a while ago where some characters are arguing about the distinction between something that is alive and not alive, then the punch line is about how God thought it would be funny to creat a universe where all meaningful distinctions are arbitrary. That one comes up surprisingly often and I still can't find the damn thing.

Last valentines day I asked a friend if he had any plans to which he responded "ice cream and whiskey" so we got talking about how there should be a line of ice cream specifically for single people to console themselves with on valentines day. Below is the list of features that we came up with.

  • alcohol flavors (to kill two birds with one stone)

  • broken heart chocolate pieces

  • A 'lonely meter' printed on the inside of the pint with marks indicating how lonely you are which are revealed as you eat

  • In conjunction with the lonely meter, if you eat all the way to the bottom there should be a pity coupon for 50% off another pint.

  • And, the piece de resistance, it should be given a generic woman's name. like for instance Mary, so when people ask what your plans are you can truthfully say "I'm spending the evening with Mary"

I expect to see this in grocery stores by next valentines day.

Is there any truth in the conspiracy theories that some drugs which could provide massive benefits to society are not being researched because they were discovered long enough ago that companies can no longer claim exclusive rights?

I once heard that "used" diamonds, ones that have already been set once and are then reclaimed and resold, are actually much less expensive than ones that have just come out of the ground. Is this true? And if so is it because there is a noticeable difference or is it in the same vein as new cars losing lots of value as soon as they are driven off of the lot?
