I've read some opinions/studies that claim less than lethal weapons increase escalation and police use it instead of de-escalating with words or physical force and not instead of using their gun. Since a taser, or most less lethal weapons, can kill this is obviously not a good thing.

I for one am quite glad the police here don't carry tasers and most if not all less lethal weapons are illegal for the general public. But on the other hand we don't have the same issue with gun violence that the US has.

What's your view of this?

It's crazy to me that something like that can be used as a defence at all. Reaching for "something" would not be justification for lethal force where I live, unless they actually have and reach for a weapon you'd be screwed. Hell even when people are holding weapons cops get in hot water here if they use lethal force sometimes. Different strokes for different folks I guess but I can't imagine living in a country where pulling up your pants or in a panic reaching for a phone in front of a police officer can get you killed, and it could be considered justified on top of that.

Being a police officer you sigh up to put your life on the line to protect others, that includes the risk of waiting to see if they're actually reaching for a weapon etc. At least where I live.

Agreed. My gf is Ukrainian too and she spent a few days scouring for boots for people, she ended up finding some guy who had a bunch of stuff in his basement including boots that she could buy.

Otherwise, they would have been out there with sneakers or worse right now.
