Yes, Reddit doesn't look for answers on these things, they look for confirmation and there is only one acceptable answer to a question that the community already has decided on and thus asking is quite pointless.

It's more complicated than a misconception. It involves the Fletcher-Muson curve.

When sound gets louder, the higher and lower frequencies get louder than the midrange. This gives the appearance of higher fidelity. So when you play two songs back to back at the same level, the louder one will sound heavier and crisper while the quieter one will sound thinner and duller.

adjusting the two songs until they are the same volume will remedy that, but since most people are not turning their volume up and down, the louder songs will trick people into thinking they sound better.

The end result is the prisoner's dilema where unless everyone participates, the person committing the violation ends up winning:
