They were illegal only in FEATURES. The AR-15 is a family of weapons! They are many of them out there, made by different manufacturers. You could still buy an AR-15 in, for example 1996, it just couldn't have a telescoping buttstock, bayonet lug, or flash hider. But you probably don't even know what those are. The AR-15 of 1996 and the AR-15 of 2016 were essentially the same thing, minus a few features, that really didn't make the weapon any more/less "deadlier".

The point is: that people who wish to do harm will do it anyway. A gun ban won't stop criminals from finding another way. It's true, those two events had nothing to do with firearms. My point exactly.

And sir, as you've studied the social sciences, you should know that correlation does not infer causation. It may be true that gun violence has gone up since 2004, but you cannot pin that on the fact that the AWB had a sunset in 2004.

The vast, vast, vast majority of firearms owners in the United States are LEGAL, law abiding, and have no ill intent. You cannot and should not make laws that also punish the law abiding firearms owners.

You cannot paint a broad brush on all gun owners, in the same sense you cannot paint a broad brush on all Muslims based on a few rotten apples.
