I think that orcs deserve a bit more thought than they sometimes receive. I'm not sure that it's fair to write them off as just plain evil. They are often described as being driven to stand against men and elves solely out of fear of Sauron in LOTR, and especially in ROTK. They may be vile, but I'm not sure that they are entirely evil.
They were a race of corrupted elves, and were described as hating themselves as much as they hated their masters and the elves from which they came.
Though orcs are depicted primarily as antagonists throughout LOTR, they were also slaves to Morgoth, and like Gollum, should be viewed with some level of pity.
