Neat! That's interesting you mention the Appalachian trail because that's what made me think of the American Chestnut when reading Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods". He mentions how they were so big that people would have huge picnics under them due to the large amount of shade they provided. I wish I got to see one in person.
