IIRC, it's only exempt from garnishment if you show up in court and request it be exempt.

  1. set up the lowest monthly payments you can get
  2. set up auto-payment for double that amount on the same day you get paid (eg the 1st of the month). Edit: Make sure the extra goes to principal and not toward the next payment

You'll turn a 30 year loan into a 8 year loan that way.

It's probably for other consequences... the person doing this AMA just spoke of lack of food and police around the country, you think less aid will help that? Not that I'm an expert in the matter or anything.

Yea, you have to make it go toward principal, forgot to mention that, good point. By law they have to let you do that though, even if they don't make it easy... but almost all student loans have it as an option (eg checkbox if you pay online).
