No basis in particular, I'm just looking to get a better understanding of how long the process of immigration takes / who qualifies and doesn't so that I can talk to people (republicans) from a stronger position.

An unrelated question, any books you'd recommend?

How long, on average, would you say that a family would have to wait to immigrate to the US from Mexico? Let's say they're average working class people, neither poor nor wealthy.

Thanks for doing this, the answers are fascinating!

So we've basically thrown the "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." out the door, cool.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it!

Eh, I mean I'm a person in the mid-west struggling with job loss but it's pretty clear to me that our job-loss is a result of a mismanaged economy and education system thanks to our well-intentioned but ineffectual government.

As for addiction, I'm not sure how that plays into this but I'm pretty sure more regulations on opiods (or fewer regulations on medical marijuana maybe) and a better funded (whether by private entity or govt) healthcare system would help with it, I haven't done as much research on the addiction problems though.

But as for job-loss, an economy that's growing and innovative should love the influx of cheap labor, that's the fuel for small businesses. You work in the oil industry (or in my case, cabinetry) long enough, then you realize you could start your own company, you start it and hire cheap labor until your company grows. It's not a zero sum game and no, not fuck them at all, I love my midwestern neighbors.

I completely understand being pissed at how shitty things are right now but I think immigration is a scapegoat, the industrial revolution depended on mass immigration.

All of that being said, I'm not the smartest guy around and am perfectly fine with being wrong. I just work in my woodshop and read as many books on economics and American history as I can. I'm certainly not going to argue anything online, except maybe the accusation that I don't like midwesterners, and I'm just giving my opinions here. Have a good one.

Any opportunities for those of us who already have a professional degree?

In my personal circumstance, a masters of architecture with a few years experience?
