Should people in the US be staying inside at home even if they don’t have symptoms? As I understand it, the answer is yes so that we can decrease density and slow the infection rates to keep hospitals below operating capacity, but I see many people still going out to bars, partying, etc.

If you’re not around people it’s fine. The whole idea of staying in and all the social distancing measures is to decrease population densities. If you thin out crowds you can slow the spread. If the spread is slow enough, people will go to hospitals at a lower rate (ie 1000 / day —> 300 / day) and this will prevent hospitals from being overburdened. What’s happening in Italy is that hospitals have too many patients and they can’t all be treated, so some people are really suffering or dying because they can’t get a ventilator or whatever treatment.
