Why do the electoral college and Iowa caucuses even exist? What's the harm in the person with the most votes winning?

I've struggled for years to understand delegates and superdelegates and all of it and it's so baffling that it's really discouraged me from being involved in politics at any level.

I'm hoping for a meaningful answer to this as well. Why do we tell ourselves every vote counts, when that doesn't seem to be the case?

Thanks for your answer, and I hope you'll permit me a followup question. I'll definitely look into the arguments against populism. I'm more concerned, though, with the ability of these electoral votes and caucus rules to be rigged and manipulated. Gerrymandering. Thousands of Iowans saying they were not represented, or were manipulated. Accusations of misconduct against the Clinton campaign regarding counting and recounting. Cruz telling people Carson dropped out.

I'm sure it's a hoot, but you can't deny it's a convoluted confusing clusterfuck. Do you really think it's the best way to run our elections, or is there room for improvement? If there is, what changes do you recommend?
