How do you know when to clean or do laundry if there's no visible reason to think something is dirty?

Thanks for the AMA! I have 2 questions.

1) I regularly take melatonin to get to sleep and if I miss a dose I usually have more vivid dreams the next time I take it. The longer it's been the more vivid the dreams. Does melatonin affect one's ability to become lucid in their dreams?

2) I've tried lucid dreaming in the past but I've only been somewhat successful, maybe 2 or 3 times. I eventually gave up because I had bad experiences. I remember the first time vividly. I was in a shop with my friends. I picked up a toy and suddenly realized that I was dreaming. I wasn't able to control much of anything and I became terrified that I wouldn't be able to wake up. I remember screaming in hopes that my SO would hear me. I tried everything I could think of but I ended up getting left behind and eventually the dream ended. Something similar happend the other times I realized I was dreaming. Was I just not fully lucid? How would you deal with this?
