Apparently I am completely full of crap on the murders per capita. I thought England was higher and I was completely wrong. I'll update my post.

I was in the Army and had plenty of experience with new guys who had to be trained pretty extensively on which end you pointed down range. So I could see that as a way to make him think that maybe not everyone should have one. However, gun control as a means to control violent crime has been proven over and over to plain not work. A lot of countries with some of the most stringent gun laws (looking at you Britain -this is not true, see edit-) have some of the most high per-capita homicide rates. Also, aside from what the news would have you think, deaths related to firearms for the past decade have been in steady decline despite the same era having some of the most lax gun laws since the 70s.

The fundamental flaw is that someone set to do harm to others is not going to be convinced by a firearms law to not use one. Availability to illegally obtained firearms is just too good to make this effective. It goes right along the same idea that making drugs illegal prevents people from buying/selling/using and subsequently having their lives ruined by them.

This is not even mentioning constitutional problems with preventing firearm ownership.

Don't take anything I say as fact. Go online and spend some time doing the research and look at both sides of the argument. The statistics are all out there.

tl;dr, gun laws only make sure that the people who you do not want to have them are the only people with them.

-edit I was completely wrong on the murders per capita. Thanks elcheecho and carlos_c for pointing that out. I should have double checked that. I left it in the post for context to some of the replies I recieved. I still stand behind the rest of my post.

I was there in 98-99 as part of sfor. How did the people there feel about us? I was 19 and genuinely trying to help people but it felt like an occupation.

I dealt with it by buying a deuce and a half and restored it. You would never guess that it was so therapeutic to just play truck every once in a while.

A funny side is that if we go camping of go to sporting events it always attracts people like us and we always have a good time surrounded by like minds.

I had it really good and was in an excellent unit in Iraq, so I am sure I am not dealing with the same level of crap, but if you want to chat ever just PM me.
