Penn has been pretty open about the fact that people use the show as a vehicle to launch their own stuff anyway, and many acts come on the show knowing that they're not gonna "win" per se. One of the biggest success stories coming out of the first season is Piff the magic dragon, who knew he wasn't going to fool anyone, but who just wanted to show off how fucking funny and good his show is.

Living in Sweden with finnish heritage and spending every summer in Finland etc, it's always messed me up that people write out their dialects in finnish. I've tried learning how to read/write proper finnish, then I get all messed up when writing to other people or reading forums/chats etc, since everyone spells/shortens things their own regional way, or use a completely different type of vocabulary compared to what you get taught in school (I had "mother tounge" classes when in primary school) and read in newspapers etc. Edit I do know I'm exaggerating a bit, but it's not far from how I feel when I'm trying to use written finnish with other living human beings.

Yeah and like OP said, I'm sure a lot of the magicians who come on the show have original acts that would have a better chance of fooling P&T, but they'd look less spectacular on TV or they'd have less energy etc.
