I’m sure porn is different but the last project I worked on had an intimacy coordinator and basically our rehearsal time with her was ensuring a safe, repeatable and consensual way to achieve the story we’re telling.

I work primarily in theatre and I’ve only had an on camera intimacy scene as an adaptation of a play, but they’re becoming standard practice so I can basically give you the gist.

In this context, choreography is the right term. As far as intimacy is concerned, the coordinator basically is the liaison between the performers and the director, balancing the actor’s comfort and the director’s vision.

For example, if you’re shooting a sex scene and the director and DOP want a shot of like, a boob grab, but one of the actors isn’t comfortable performing that, it’s the coordinator’s job to work with both parties to find a solution that works for everyone.

At the same time, if both performers are comfortable with doing the boob grab, it’s the coordinator’s job to choreograph something that’s safe and repeatable. For example, if the receiver doesn’t like having their nipples touched, they work together to make something work.

As for with the crew, they don’t really interact with them. I will say that skeleton crews are the norm for intimacy, and only the minimal essential people are there. They also take some time because as you can imagine, being tits out in front of a bunch of people is AWKWARD
