A lot of the protest have nothing to do with democracy. There exists a very strong sense of xenophobia and nake resentment towards chinese immigrants and tourists in what they perceived as encroaching on their territory. It is abhorrent to hear some of the slogan they were shouting. If this happened in the US it would be perceived as simple racism.

Why are HK people so work up about this? Wouldn't it be true that those who has never set foot on China can't possibly be charged with a crime committed in china?

However, the Chinese and HK judiciary system are not trustworthy at all. We're scared that the Chinese gov./HK gov. will frame dissidents of crimes included in the law (for instance, business-related laws), then extradite them to China for trial.

If you (or HK people) question the integrity of the court system, what prevents HK citizens being send to China today, with or without this extradition law?

But weren't they accused of committing whatever crime in China? And they were abducted illegally? Wouldn't having a proper legal framework be a good thing?
