As someone who stands lookout, I hate you people. Because you're unpredictable and most are very undertrained.

Coming from an engineering background, you might want to look into 3rd Assistant Engineer. It's an entry-level officer position, but in the engineering department. You'll have to put in watchstanding time in an unlicensed position, but you should be able to make the jump much quicker. I have a mechanical engineer friend who's doing the same thing.
