Worth noting that to get in the PE route you basically have to do IB from undergrad. It’s true I banks recruit at MBA programs too but the exit ops are way fewer at that age / level of seniority.

There’s sure to be several counterexamplws but the overall trend is that they recruit from the IB analyst pool at the top firms. Friend in GS TMT got his PE offer like 10 months in as a first year analyst

I assure you there is an enormous amount of useless academic research.

A ton of it is just produced by people trying to get tenure
