Quite a few content delivery providers are offering local caching servers to ISPs; Google, NetFlix, Akamai to name a few...

Any plans? As would this kind of architecture not be ideal for Cloudflare as you could actually filter DDOS traffic and security threats within the originating network, and save on bandwidth costs.

As a network techy at an ISP, I'd love to see it ;-)

I'm not too sure about your Akamai claim, as they actually put a number of servers in our DC just for SSL traffic, and I can see quite a bit of my person SSL traffic going to that IP range, Facebook images are a perfect example...

The majority of Akamai's machines are using ISP IP space, not their own ;)

SSL is a perfectly fine justification, and it's a valid technical requirement for getting a dedicated IP address. You shouldn't have any issues with the registries, they may however ask for proof.
