That was my response to them. It was my first meeting lol and the first things coming up are how we (this generation of veterans) are selfish and don't want to join the VFW because we don't believe in brotherhood the way they do, etc. I didn't want to say anything brash, being the new guy and all, but my immediate thoughts were "and what exactly does this group do to try and reach the young generation? What do you do that's relevant to them?"
It's like you said, that VFW post is a bunch of older fellas. They do retired people stuff: they meet up for the early bird special every Friday at a local diner. They go to a casino twice a month in the middle of the day in the middle of the week. Sorry gents, this generation of warfighter is in the workforce and can't accommodate your schedule. They probably don't want to be part of these types of events anyway.
Sure, you could probably round up the boys and go to a bar every once in a while. But this gen of vets is obviously younger, more active. They'd wanna do shit like go paintballing, hiking, shooting range, etc. I should bring this up at next month's meeting...

I recently joined a local VFW and see that exact sentiment. They spend a little bit of timing complaining that the new generation of veterans aren't interested in joining them because we're "selfish" and "social-media driven". Fact of the matter is that those guys are all Vietnam era gents.

This is really exciting news. Letting go of the first-born is tough to do, but it takes a good "parent" to see that the baby is quite grown up and with the right people on your team it can essentially run itself. Congratulations on all your success bro.
