Those images almost look so crispy I'd guess they're straight from the camera which if you're seeing the site on a retina display I completely understand.

Ah, now that I've seen it on my desktop I can seen that background image is 8MP and still has it's original Exif meta data so I can see it was taken with an iPhone 6. That's amazing.

Yeah, if you have a recent Apple computer with a retina display I'd guess it doesn't get bogged down by large images in the slightest. Your web site is how I'd prefer all web sites to look: visually stunning, nice big images I'd need a 4K monitor to appreciate, etc. Often a web developer will find himself having to compromise from this ideal in creative ways.

If the site detected which devices were accessing it and provided appropriately resized images you could have the best of both worlds. This might be achievable with CSS3 but I'd probably just use JavaScript.

I took the image on your front page and just ran a blur filter over it and saved it at 69% quality just as an example and it's about 486KiB vurses the original which was 3,779KiB so it's the same size but almost an 1/8th the file size:

I'm not suggesting you blur your images but it's one of those compromises that may be useful if you're trying to get the site to react to user interaction a little faster.

I can't duplicate the behavior I was seeing but it was like the images and style sheets hadn't loaded so layers of text over one another.

The website is actually beautiful, I see you're through squarespace which would lead me to believe that you're running their content management system so it might just be a mix of sharing bandwidth/server time with other squarespace customers and for devices as crappy as mine the CMS front end might be a little sluggish.

Optimizing the JPEG images will boost load times at the expense of image quality and maybe bog my device down a little less but there's probably little more that could be done without trimming out Squarespace' WYSIWYG code. I'm a huge fan of Amazon's cloud but that's because I code everything I do by hand which keeps everything really cheap.

Your farm is lovely!
