When I was Africa in the 1990s we were on the Version 14 MREs for the first month (same stuff as what they used in Mogadishu). MREs get a bit of a bad rap, and we joked the crescent shape on the cases signified the outhouse door cutout where you'd be spending all your time. But seriously they were decent and even then at the time had amenities like Tabasco sauce to spice that shit up. My only complaint is they were carb-heavy, which is great for infantry but if you're working a desk job like I did, carb-heavy meals make you a bit lethargic and hungry.

I remember what our unit used to do is open ALL the packages from all the cases we had into a big-ass desk drawer. People would pick and choose, using it as a buffet. Although people would cherry pick the good stuff, our unit was small enough to where out of respect to one another we didn't pillage the drawer. One huge benefit is most people didn't eat everything in their meals, so they'd leave the unused packets behind. The guys who wanted a snack at 2 am would just bust open a packet of freeze-dried peaches instead of opening an entire meal.

From what I recall, the stuff that got eaten first was spaghetti, beef stew, and ham slice. The stuff that would get eaten last usually ended up being tuna/noodles and pork/rice. It was all edible, though we were grateful when local food contractors got brought in.

I pictured the BBC really arresting the pimp. "Frightfully sorry, sir."
