I think the reason you're getting downvoted is because in a lot of other western liberal democracies (and non-democracies too) people want to draw a line to some things being so hateful that they shouldn't be allowed to spread (or be said).

I don't think it's because "people are offended", but because it rallies others to also vent opinions which they may have previously held in secret, but now are encouraged to say out in the open. It may be related to 'incitement of religious/racial hatred" which is illegal in the UK.

There are probably other reasons too, but this came to the top of my head.
