Currently, the easiest way to get hydrogen is from Natural Gas, which is nonrenewable. Extracting hydrogen from water uses a lot more energy than you get back from burning the hydrogen. From that standpoint it's much more efficient to just run the cars on natural gas, but you still face the infrastructure challenges of distributing gaseous fuels.
