Civil service is one year of basically unpaid work in a hospital or elderly care.

In any public institution. Hospitals are the "default" since they always need help, but you need to arrange the job yourself so it can be almost anything. I did civil engineering for a city since I study it anyway, and know people who went to schools, libraries and even a theater.

(It gave very valuable experience and contacts for later job seeking, by the way. Zero regrets. The only downside is I can't quite relate when the other guys start recounting their army stories in the sauna.)

It is joining the reserves. The Finnish constitution states that every able-bodied citizen has a duty to defend the country. In practice it means almost every male joining the reserve. (Though the number is reducing - currently somewhere around 80% - thanks to increasing budget pressures and non-military options for fulfilling the duty.)
