The reason for that, to me, is that that 1% could be (to a limited extent) anything. If there is just one component that can't be understood or trusted, the whole thing could be ruined.

It's very disappointing and slightly terrifying that today not a single computer can be purchased that is free down to the BIOS equivalent. Lemote no longer produces anything, from what Richard told me... the only option now is to run a CoreBoot compatible computer.

It sounds like your ideal is of course for the users and at a certain point, when the hardware is there, to be as free as you can. It's reasonable in your position and I thank you for all of the new users Ubuntu has helped. Thanks for the response.

What's your opinion on truly free software such of RMS? Obviously it's not something you've integrated into Ubuntu but I think privacy is what pushed me to switch to be fully free...

It kind of makes me wonder what the point of pushing open source to the general public is if you don't receive the full benefits of it besides the monetary aspect of not supporting monopolies - which I fully agree with. Of course the Amazon integration kind of points in what direction it may go...
