As a working animator, I'll back up what Lucas is saying. Definitely. It's the reel. College is where a lot of people (myself included) got their first reel. But you can do it far cheaper online these days. And if you know specifically what part you want to focus on, the animation of characters, say... well, you can find a much more targeted course online and get hire-able much faster. I honestly don't recommend spending the money and 4 years to aspiring animators anymore...
