Any thoughts about the big Japanese distillers (nikka, suntory) going from age statements to no age statements?

Do you think it’s an appropriate response to the increased demand for their products? Specifically, do you think they should have just raised prices but kept the age statements? Are you implying that there wasn’t much of a difference between the ASL (age statement labels) and non-ASL? Also - what’s the difference between a pure malt and a single malt?
