I think taught and practiced is a good idea, yeah. But even for boys, the size range between an 11 year old and a 12 year old who has hit puberty can be enormous. I think in terms of safety it would be best to wait until 99% of players have hit puberty and are on a level(ish) playing field.

Hey Greg! We met at PAX West and chatted for a while. I'm the nerd that runs /r/toejamandearl. Thanks again for connecting with me.

What has been the hardest part of running your own independent game studio? Any suggestions for hopeful game developers?

Cheers!

I briefly helped coach a women's JV ice hockey team (high school level) and there were girls who had been playing since they were 5 and girls who had first put on ice skates 2 days before the season started. So, while their ages didn't range very much, their skill level and prepardness for being checked were vastly different.

That said, there should be checking in women's hockey. But I do think Mr. Gregzky has a point.
