Yeah you'd fit right in as a city councilor for a mid Atlantic city, say like Baltimore, hell you could probably even become mayor or some shit, or even governor.

There was a great piece by HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel that did a piece on the exploitive practices when it comes to climbing Mount Everest and the Nepalese Sherpas, that was very eye-opening. What was the most eye-opening part was not the abusive American companies that hire these Sherpas (they are surprisingly not the root of the problem), by the Nepalese government itself and how they have monetised Mount Everest. The line to the peak is hundreds of mountain climbers long on any given day during the climbing season. But what is worse is that Nepal is so poor that many Nepalese have only the option of being a Sherpa to raise their families, but if they die, they get no benefits from the government, the government says to widows, we need a body (that is buried under the avalanche or in a crevasse) for proof. Now some companies like a major one out Seattle have taken better efforts to provide for the Sherpas they hire in the last few years since the major accident a couple of years ago, also providing benefits for the family of the Sherpa if they die on the mountain such as paying for the children to go to school through college I think it was. Its an exploitive business that hasn't gotten enough attention.

According to one of the kids who played on the show and was the son of an EP of Bill Nye the Science guy, he was friendly to him probably because of who his dad was, but to other people working on the show he was less polite

Now Bill lived in Seattle for a long time and I had a friend who lived by where Bill lived, and I heard this story he told me back in like 2002 (to my recollection he was still in Seattle at the time). My friend's older brother loved Bill Nye, it got him into science (and while I don't keep in touch with the guy now, remember he is like some chemist for some fortune 500 company now (I only know this because my old friend and I are Facebook friends and I lurk his brothers page because his older brother and I were pretty cool, he was 15 and I was 12).

So back to the story my friend was telling me back in 2002. His older brother discovers that Bill lives on the same block. And he was fucking ecstatic. He didn't want to hunt the guy down but he prepared himself to be ready if the day ever came where he would be walking down the street on his block and bump into Bill Nye. Well low and behold after discovering that Bill Lived on the same block, he bumps into the guy. And the way my friend told me, it broke his brother's heart to learn that his reason for going wanting to go into science was less than cordial (I'm putting it lightly, if I remember correctly, my friend told me that Bill Nye basically told his brother to get lost or fuck off, I can't remember the finer details).

Now having lived in Seattle most of my life until a couple of years ago, you always here from others who had less than happy memories of meeting Bill Nye in person. Many of these campfire stories around Bill Nyes personality were just that, camp fire stories told 5th hand accounts before I ever heard of them. But a few of them were firsthand accounts of the man.

Now maybe he was having off days when he met some of his fans, but in general these rumors about him and his abrasive personality towards younger fans does seem to have a solid truth to them (the operative word being "seems", they could all be bullshit). Who knows maybe he is a dick in real life or maybe his legendary dickishness has become some fort of meme, a stand alone complex, where the actual origin of the rumors are less important than the life those rumors have taken on.

I've never met the guy and can't argue one way or another, I've only heard the firsthand and 5th hand accounts of the man.

People don't "climb" Everest. They're walked up it after ladders and ropes and all sorts of shit have been strung up for them by others...It's a joke.

You really hit the nail on the head, which is why the Nepalese government has vigorously monetised Mount Everest, because they know many of the climbers are rich pricks who are willing to spend thousands of dollars just so they can say that they "climbed" mount everest even if they are not even remotely qualified to climb the mountain in terms of skill, health, or experience. The Mountain has become a cash-cow.
