That's how many undocumented individuals start out in the US. I think people automatically think of people physically crossing the border, but a large portion is visa overstays.

In your opinion, what is the best way that citizens can show their support for undocumented immigrants? I plan to write to my congressman, but my district just reelected the same asshole that doesn't give a shit, so I'm pessimistic about that. I've reached out to my undocumented friends to say some words of support personally, but it doesn't feel like enough. I've been posting on Facebook to "publicly" show my support. Any other ideas? What would make you feel supported in the middle of this horrible train wreck?

You're right that these are civil offenses and people treat them like criminal offenses. However, the government treats them like criminal cases - through detention, separating families. The massive consequences of deportation don't compare to that of any other civil offense. However, since it's a civil case, immigrants have no right to an attorney. They have to navigate the courts alone, unless they're so lucky to be able to afford to hire an attorney or find a pro bono attorney. It's a huge problem, even before you account for people who don't speak English or Spanish. The government treats them like criminals, but they don't have the right to a public defender like defendants have in criminal court.

I'm so sorry that this is happening to you. I have been thinking about this election's impact on immigrants, whether it's someone who's been here for decades or a recent arrival. I'm sorry that our country voted yes to a man who has made it clear he doesn't want you here. It is devastating. I, and millions of others, don't feel the same way. You're just as American as I am, and you belong here.

My question is how are your dad and any siblings coping with this? (I read in one of your comments that your mom passed away - I'm really sorry to hear that.) Did your parents have any kids while in the US who would have US citizenship?
