That said, the CalTrain locomotives are awesomely huge and noisy compared to anything we have in the UK.

It's not just Caltrain--American trains, particularly on the West Coast, are much larger than European ones, especially British trains. The loading gauge is massively different.

I know some Israelis who did that. Essentially, they've been under extreme stress, and they want to cut loose. So that's the tense bit. But the disagreeable bit is probably also due to Israeli manners, or lack thereof.
