I'm an American mariner - anyone that works an American flagged unlimited tonnage/HP vessel is going to make in the ballpark of 6 figures starting out on their license. Not sure if that's competitive with shore based power plant work or not.

However, nuke power on civilian vessels is a virtual impossibility. The security requirements would be enormous, not to mention the fact that the plant would likely not run long enough to make it cost effective. It'd be far cheaper to run on LNG.

Do you have any advice for an aspiring SF/military fiction writer? I'm working on the first draft of my first novel.

Would you recommend pursuing traditional publishing before attempting to self publish?
