What is the process of determining a light schedule? Is it done manually, or are there automated programs into which you can input traffic data to find the optimal timing of red/green lights?

Then you have traffic dependent plans that adapt to the traffic on the fly ( TASS, VS-Plus or Motion ).

That's interesting, how common are those? I've always wondered when we'd get some kind of intelligent sensors to detect when there's not enough traffic coming towards the intersection to justify keeping it green.
