This is an excellent point. The real question is not "can it be bypassed?" because the answer is always yes.

We weren't worried about climate change during the cold war. We've been expanding the ways civilization might off itself without really solving any of the old ones.

You've always needed more than one news source. Back in the day, for me, it was local paper, NYT, NPR on the radio and Time magazine.

Now there are 10,000 different sources instead of a dozen, but the need for multiple perspectives has not changed.
