Depression is common, but is it more common than the general public in the US? That's the question. I knew of a few people in my class that were administratively separated for depression, but both of them had a previous history.

As for drinking, yes, everyone drinks and smokes a shitload of pot.

I think you're mistaken. They launched the new application format this year. Before that, you were not allowed to choose your own country. You could express preferences, but it was not a guarantee. Now it is.
