This is an underrated comment. The largest cost of higher education is the opportunity cost of not working. Each semester saved on the front end is worth it. It's easier to pull ahead financially if you push yourself harder for a shorter time, and start working in your career earlier.

As a Virginian who will live very close to the new end-of-the-Silver Line, I am very upset that Metro is being expanded to Dulles Airport and beyond at such an exorbitant cost. It demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding of the best uses for heavy rail (high density development, which Loudoun is NOT), and a willingness to put the bizarre fetishization of a 19th century transportation mode ahead of real throughput! Why should we spend BILLIONS to move 20,000 people a day, in two directions! This is madness! Especially since the heavy rail in question is powered by the electrical grid, which is mostly coal-fired.

Yes, why pursue natural gas express bus lanes for a fraction of a cost? Buses are easily replaceable as technology improves, but train cars for Metro have to be ordered from Italy years in advance. Metro requires large parking lots to accommodate commuters from all over (who still congest local roads to get to the Metro station).

The only people who advocate bloated Metro over more flexible transit options are fools or knaves.

Cato Institute has long had robust internship program, so I'm curious: are you seeing a growth in applications that reflects the growth of libertarianism we so often hear about among young adults?
