It's Atrus falling into the Fissure during the Myst opening cutscene.

Game order: Myst, Riven, Myst III: Exile, Myst IV: Revelations. End of Ages is marked as Myst V, but it ties in heavily to stuff from Myst Online: Uru Live, which means that bopping over to play some of that and hear about the Bahro is a good idea. MO:UL is multiplayer, but there's also a single-player version called Uru: Complete Chronicles (available on Steam) if you'd prefer not to play with others.
There are 3 books as well; the Book of Atrus (BoA) is about how Atrus grew up and learned to Write Ages and handled the plotting of his father. It's best read right before or right after Riven, because Riven (the place) plays a role in the book. Going back in time, the Book of Ti'ana (BoT) explains more about the D'ni civilization and what happened to it, so if you want to learn the backstory of why Atrus is all alone and about that pretty chamber from the end of Myst, pick this book. Book of D'ni (BoD) follows after both Myst and Riven, and discusses Atrus' attempt to bring back D'ni.
If you want to get technical about chronology, here's the timeline order of stuff:
Book of Ti'ana ; Book of Atrus ; Myst ; Riven ; Book of D'ni ; Myst III: Exile ; Myst IV: Revelation ; Uru ; Myst V: End of Ages.
