I'm not sure about all species, but I have read one specific article about how a species of freshwater zooplankton can "turn on and off" certain genes depending on the environment it is in. Also since these plankton produce clones certain phenotypes will be expressed in the next generation due to environmental factors. The article is titled something like ...Daphnia the chosen one, hope this helps :)
