Having served in three wars, what is your opinion of war? Is it a necessary evil or a hoax perpetrated upon the masses for the financial gain of a few?

For example, I saw an emotional retired general being interviewed on the History Channel state the Vietnam War was a waste in his opinion due to the micromanagement of the war from the White House. A SAM site was not allowed to be bombed until after it's construction was completed and it was operational costing the lives of seven airmen when it was allowed to be taken out.

Edit: For the record, I'm a fellow vet but with only one war behind me.
