... Because the choice between being burned at the stake online or ostracized from your own industry is one that everyone would love to make..

Probably because there is some (often misplaced) hope that the girls will actually be better off in their new situation. People from extreme poverty often sell themselves or family members with the idea that not only will this money maybe save their siblings from starvation, but also maybe they'll be better off in the end.

Sometimes, they're not wrong and being married off to a stranger with money is better than starving in the mud.

Sonetimes, it's prostitution and eventual death.

Sometimes, it's somewhere in between.

Poverty and human trafficking are inextricably mixed, and there even gets to be grey areas at the edges. It's a very complex and nuanced issue, not nearly as cut and dried as it seems on the surface.

One thing that seems to hold true almost universally though is that the vast majority of the people in the trade are unscrupulous predators.... But even that's not always the case. There have been cases of girls "making it" and going back to get their siblings married out of poverty. So it's all kinds of fucked up and no universal truths to be had.

The real problem here is poverty. Millions (billions?) of people in the world are poor in a way that very few people in developed nations can comprehend, and what seems like a nightmare scenario to some is a ray of hope to others.

It's suuuper fucked up.

If you want to end trafficking, end poverty.

Yeah, unless they are willing to spend thousands of hours recovering your data in an actual laboratory. If you're up to that level of nefarious activity, I'd assume that you would run encryption and have an incendiary rigged anyway.

The most seriously paranoid person I ever met had his RAM and SSD rigged with thermite paste. It dries hard like Chalk and includes an initiator compound so that it can be started with a regular squib.

Funny thing was, the shit he was up to probably wouldn't even be noticed by LE, and if it was, it would have to be a pretty slow day. Garden variety encryption would have been more than enough.

Edit :Since people have been pming me wanting to know, he sold viagra without a prescription on the dark Web lol. Way more paranoid than anyone I've ever met in any kind of shady venture. It was like enemy of the state only with viagra. The effort he put into his "operational security" would have been good enough for a big smuggling / trafficking enterprise.

But it cost 3bn in publicly funded research and trials, and Bentley's aren't free either.

How do you explain the obvious incompetence of your skipper, who was apparently unable to ensure that there were at least a rudimentary set of paper charts on board (because I know someone onboard had a smartphone, so you had GPS) and your engineer, who was apparently unable to reroute power from the main engines to even just run the GPS?

I am an offshore sailor and losing one or both of our generators, or even both generators and our main engine would not have constituted any kind of actual emergency except perhaps while making landfall on a lee shore.

Your skipper, engineer, and ship were obviously poorly prepared for the hardships of the sea. How can you explain this?

Also, how do you lose both gensets and can't repair them underway? I've been at sea on and off for 30 years of my life, and except in a hurricane, this makes no sense, even on a 60-foot schooner we could make extensive repairs underway.

And how the hell does someone become a captain of a ship and doesn't have a $200 handheld GPS with rudimentary charts and a package or two of AA batteries tucked away in a drawer? This whole thing reeks of manifest incompetence.

Also, hand steering by compass? Yeah, that's how I've logged 90 percent of my seatime....cry me a river.
