It doesn't have to go anywhere. Wealth can be destroyed. For example, if everyone agrees a chair is worth $50, whoever owns that chair has $50 in assets. If suddenly that style of chair goes out of fashion or someone discovers a major defect with it, the price everyone assigns to it can go down. No money has to change hands. If opinions change, value can change. The chair is still there, however.
