After reading everything it seems like you did all you could do to help and that this accident was more his fault than yours. You don't have to be haunted by this. Bad things happen.

The best way to protect yourself is not to do it in the first place, because no matter what, no matter what laws are in place, people will break them. Even if they do put a law in place for "revenge porn" it probably won't do a great deal. It's like a game of cat and mouse.

Just look at the movie and music industry for example. They throw hundreds of millions dollars to stop piracy, but it still continues, because the internet is so vast, and complicated, and it's relatively easy to hide. For example, how do you stop a company in another country from posting up copyrighted material, when that isn't even an issue where they live? You shut it down? Another one can pop up, unless you're willing to block an entire country, which is really stupid.
