Definitely not the guy doing the AMA, but I do have some predictions on how skateboarding will affect the Olympics and vice versa. Skateboarding has been competitive since the sport came to light, but not necessarily competitive in a "traditional sport" way. Skateboarding culture has leaned itself towards competing with one another for the betterment of your own skill set. It doesn't really have set rules, and when it does, it puts limits on what skating should look like. Take Evan Smith for example, dude killed it at SLS last year even though he might've had one of the most unorthodox styles on the floor. However, Smith didn't start ranking up towards the end of the season because nobody was paying attention to his style. Everyone is about throwing themselves down the biggest stairset or steepest handrail, but that dude put every single park to work based off of his inclination to communicate with his environment around him. SLS is specifically designed for skateboarding, and still has a small bias. I fear what rules the Olympics are going to hold onto the first skating exhibit in Olympic history. This will be the pilot episode that determines whether or not we air it again next time.
And how are they even going to pick skaters to represent their country? Are they just gonna hold prelim competitions to determine who they want on their team?
Skateboarding culture is one of the most unified cultures tied in with sports, I don't think that the Olympics are going to fare well with most skaters because it's divisive based off of nationality.
I digress; down to the actual competition. The broadcasting will probably bring more young viewers than the Olympics has seen in years. The median age for people watching the Olympics is around 50-53. I feel this is a large driving factor towards putting skating in the Olympics. The teams that each nationality chooses are going to be STACKED. I'm guessing people like Kelvin Hoeffler, Leticia Bufoni, and Luan Oliveira are obviously going to be on Brazil's team. I'm guessing that Kyle Walker, Chris Joslin, Nyjah Huston, and other big faces in skating are going to be on the US team. This might also make names for skaters in different countries who haven't made a name of themselves yet until they go to the Olympics and snatch the gold from under everyone (cough cough, Hoeffler in SLS last year) Of course most of these skaters have more of an inclination for street than for vert, so then you gotta get down to vert skating. That's an easily manageable thing, transition has been the face of skateboarding for the most part if its ever televised. That shit is also gonna be wild.
Even though skateboarders are going to knock it because it doesnt feel like it belongs, it could be mutually beneficial and get more people into skateboarding AND the Olympics. This is the only hope we can cling onto; that we're helping one another more than we're hurting one another. It all depends on the attitude you have while you're watching it.
