You don't need W-2 income to have access to a 401k. Self-Employed earners can open a Solo/Individual 401k and make both contributions as the employee as well as give themselves an employer match.

Depending on how your business is organized and it's earnings you can save up to $57,000 / yr (2020) between contribution and match, which is higher than a SEP-IRA (if you just meant a traditional/Roth IRA, then FYI both a SEP and Solo 401k are options if you desire more tax sheltering).

Anyone interested can find more here.
