I'm a huge Chumbawamba fan (more a fan of their political ideology), but I would love to hear some of the good stories about how they promoted anarchy on tour. They seem like really good people just generally.

This is pretty true of waiters/waitresses from my experience, especially if they have to pay a percentage of their tips to other staff (like bartenders, bussers, or hosts). There were some weekday lunches where I actually had to pay to work because the tip out is based on the bill amount, not your actual tips. And at the place I worked, bartenders got that percentage regardless of whether the customers ordered alcohol. Cash tips help you by allowing you to have some kind of cash you take home that day (instead of say waiting 2 weeks for a payday, which you usually owed money at anyway due to weekend tips).

It's also a reason to never undertip for a meal, even a poorly serviced one. No one, even people bad at their jobs, should be paying to work. Or you know, we could just pay wait staff properly instead.

I always wonder why so many delivery drivers never read our instructions to "ring doorbell." Basically, all our living areas are upstairs and you can't hear a knock to save your life from up there. But the doorbell is obvious. It's not hidden and even has a little light in the button, yet I can't count the number of times delivery people just knock and then drive away saying we didn't answer. We've taken to having someone sitting near the door in the stairs when the time gets close, but I've had to wait more than an hour there before.

So in all seriousness, why can't people follow instructions?

Exactly why I put that at the end. It's ridiculous. And though I only used waitressing as a supplement to help while I was deciding on my next professional job, it gave me a massive insight into the issues in the industry. I met so many people that had been bouncing from one job to the next because sometimes it pays really well (but it is directly proportional to the prices of the restaurant and how busy it is). But in between those great jobs, you'll find hundreds that you basically earn nothing.

I had enough extra to live on during that time, but I knew people who literally had to decide which bills to pay each month because there was no way to pay them all. So it eventually becomes a system of paying electric so it doesn't get turned off, then next month your heat, and the next your phone, and it just repeats in those cycles. There was no way to catch up, until you landed another good job (which thanks to the industry seems to always be temporary). Its just wrong and no one should have to live that way.

This is true. It only works for those services that let you text the driver, but you are right.
