I've been a tracer at central baggage in corporate. You don't check a laptop. Why? It's expensive and not reimbursable, also, kinda important, the lithium ion batteries can explode when not pressurized. Don't check your medication, and don't check your electronics. Also, if you're going on a cruise, don't get the flight that gets there 90 minutes before cruise departure.

Last tip, and as a tracer, this is most important. Those little tags with your name and address on them that you tie to the handle of your bag. Make 2 or 3 extra and put them inside random pockets of your bag.

EDIT: Okay, NOT EVERY AIRCRAFT HAS A PRESSURIZED CARGO HOLD. It depends on the airline, and on the aircraft. Don't believe me? Call US Airways and ask about checking a pet. Then when they say no, ask why...

EDIT 2: Okay, I haven't been at Delta for several years, I was unaware of the cargo hold conversions.

People do it all the time.

Here is one general example that people don't know about. DFW (Dallas/Ft. Worth) When you check a bag, the belt system alone (before it gets to the plane) is 17 miles. If you travel with someone, cross pack. Some of your stuff in theirs and vice versa. If only one shows up, you'll be covered.

As far as cruise ships go, just go the night before and spring for the hotel room. There are many times bags need to go out on the next flight. Not because we're dicks, but because of safety. (The center of gravity) Now, we do our best to deliver these bags (on our dime) but it can be a few hours.
