if your a redditor you can join /r/fweddit and be given free ships, have plenty of fun people to fly with and a lot of help in getting a hang of the game.

Also one thing to remember is that while you gain skill points over time, you only ever use a small handfull of those points while flying any given ship. You do not become exponentially more powerful over time like other MMO's, you simply gain more options as to what you can fly or fit over time.
