This guy is clearly a self starter and has initiative. He's looking for work and he's making concessions to make that happen. I agree with the union stance that a certain market value should be protected and maintained. So what are those unions doing to attract and develop new talent and self starters like this guy? What can the union do for him that being a free agent won't? How will it put food on his table?

You wrote the script, but not the novel. It is possible that Ellis intends a contrary or more interpretive ending and that ambiguity is so hardwired into his story that you couldn't possibly screenwrite it with any accuracy without that embedded haze. Therefore, if Ellis intends otherwise, it may not have actually happened whether you like it or not.
